Creepy crawly...

The creepy crawly roadshow came to school yesterday. The children really enjoyed finding out about the animals Tracey and John had brought.
The first was a marbled white butterfly called Magic. It was beautiful. John told us that butterflies taste with their feet. They have a kind of straw, and everything they eat is like a drink.

We then got to meet a tiger swallow tail butterfly.

Next we met Colin the cocroach. John told us that Colin the cockroach tastes with his antennae. They have very good hearing from the spikes on his back.

Tracy got a leaf insect out of their box next. Leaf insects are very rare, and take lots of care to look after. We didn't get to touch the leaf insect as it was very fragile. Leaf insects look just like leaves to help camouflage.

Brian the snail came to meet us after the leaf insect. Brian is very clever because he made his shell from the food he eats. His eyes are on the two stalks. Snails have 2 noses! Brian's slime is very good for healing any cuts you may have on your hands.

Thelma the thorny stick insect came out to play after Brian. He likes to eat bramble leaves, ivy and oak. The children held their arms out pretending to be trees so that Thelma felt at home.

The children were really excited for the next one. John told us the real incy wincy spider had come to see us!! The children whispered the song as Tracy got Incy out. We had to be so quiet because every hair on Incy's body is an ear!

Our last visitor was Kellogg the corn snake. He was bright and shiny. John told us some facts about snakes. They cannot smell, but use their tongue to sense what is around them. Kellogg was very cold but warms up as the day goes on. Lots of children were very brave and held Kellogg round their neck.

  1. Fantastic picture's and wonderful comments. John wants to know "who is the wierdo in the background with the ponytail?" Tracey rolls her eyes!
